My research focuses on how families and relational partners communicate during times of change. More specifically, I examine how uncertainty, which is inherent during periods of flux, influences communicative goals and subsequent communication processes  within our personal relationships.

My work has largely examined (a) in-laws navigating the transition to extended family and (b) adult children grappling with their parents’ late-life divorce and subsequent remarriage and stepfamily formation. Additional work, including current projects, explores the links among uncertainty, goals, and communication when families and relational partners face health challenges such as depression, infertility, and lung cancer.
